374 households and businesses in Warwick will receive a letter this week from "Warwick, c/o Dynegy, Dallas TX". That's the number of elec. accounts in Town that are still on National Grid's "Basic Service" - the supply part of the elec. bill. The letter explains the program, which entails a 41month fixed-price contract, as well as how to opt-out...or opt-in if you want to up-grade to a more locally produced renewable energy supply. Please don't ignore this letter. This program is the result of a very public process involving a couple of years of hard work by 12 other neighboring towns with whom Warwick joined forces. The process was conducted under strict DPU guidelines. We are not alone - more than half the cities & towns in MA have already adopted similar programs. The goal is to lower electricity supply rates and choose options that align with the wishes of the population. The chart in the letter lists prices, but only the current summer price for NGrid Basic Service - $0.09898/kWh (residential). NGrid's residential winter price was $0.13957 this past Nov through May, and their 3-yr average price was $0.11985. So having a fixed rate for the next 41 months that is lower than either their summer rate or historical average is a good bet that folks will save $ in the long run. Even the local "100% New England Renewable Energy" option will be lower than NGrid's winter rate last year. Those folks with their own solar panels could save money even if they opted for the 100% local option. Those households offset much or all of their elec. use in the long summer days, but buy electricity in the winter when it could be cheaper than NGrid's winter rate. Whether or not you get a letter, there is a very helpful FAQ page here: https://colonialpowergroup.com/faqs/ You will NOT get a letter if you have already chosen supplier other than Nat. Grid or if you have put a "supplier block" on your account (to stay off marketing lists). You won't even get a letter if you are enrolled in one of NGrid's own Green Up options. So look on your bill - the supply portion - to see who is listed there. If you want to opt-in to this program and you are enrolled with another supplier, be sure to check with them first to see if there is a fee for terminating your contract with them.
