Excitement Building for 2017 Corregatta!!! Warwick's corregatta is fun for all ages. The only thing the race needs is more boats. Consider the fun this 10-year-old had after last year's race. She chose to write her school essay describing a fun summer event about the Warwick's corregatta. Enjoy Sierra York's school essay and consider racing with us August 27, 2017. 'CORREGATTA' BY SIERRA YORK "Are you ready Sierra?" my grandpa asked me while pushing me out into the water. I was sitting on a thin piece of cardboard that was very well crafted into a miniature row boat, that we had named, "Flipper". I was surrounded by other boats just like mine. One was made from 20 pizza boxes and another looked like a large canoe! "Ready Grandpa" I beamed back at him dipping my kayak paddle into the water. A man with a Cape Cod t-shirt shouted, "On your mark...get set...GO!!" I REACHED MY PADDLE DEEP INTO THE WATER PUSHING FORWARD AS MUCH AS I COULD. You can do it Sierra, I thought to myself, all I must do is get to the buoy and back. I pushed harder and harder getting closer to the leaders. The sun shone bright on my forehead and made the water sparkle in Moore's Pond. I cut around the buoy, cutting off the bigger lead boat. Finally in the lead, it was hard to keep my boat going straight toward shore, it zig-zagged with each of my strokes. Then I jolted to the side, my arms scraping the cardboard. Another boat was trying to slow me down. I pushed forward harder than ever, the canoe had now taken the lead, it had 2 paddlers and their boat was going straight for shore. I got back to the sandy beach hopping out of my boat and running over to my grandpa making him stumble backward as I jumped and wrapped my arms around him. "Good job Sierra" he whispered in my ear as he gave me a quick kiss. I had gotten second place and was bombarded with hugs from all my family and friends. It was now the adults time to race, my sister's boyfriend, Scott, was going to be the captain of my boat, "Flipper". It did not have any holes, was not soggy and had survived the kids' race. He jumped in with tons of enthusiasm. Off they went, the canoe that had won the first round tipped over right away giving my boat a head start. They recovered quickly jumping back in. We were in the lead turning around the buoy first. On our way back two boats blocked Scott off, we lost our lead quickly. The canoe got back into first place. Scott fought with them all the way back and got into shore just behind them, for second place. I was down there to congratulate him as soon as he got out of the boat. Flipper was a little bit soggier now. I was glad the canoe won because my aunt was one of the paddlers. Scott and I both got prizes. He got a small cooler and I got a nice towel printed with colorful beach balls. They also gave a prize to the boat that sank first, it was the pizza box boat. The people watching the boat race got to vote for their favorite boat. I was excited to find out that I was voted fan favorite!! I got a $5.00 ice cream gift certificate and was interviewed by the local newspaper. The 'Corregatta' cardboard boat race event, my name and comments were in the newspaper. It was some spectacular, soggy, silly, summer family fun.
