Historical Society Minutes September 15, 2010 Meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m. after a presentation and video on The Colonial Kitchen by Beth Gilgun. There were 21 people in attendance for the program, and 18 for the business meeting. The secretary's report was approved as read. Treasurer's report approved as read. Society accounts total $15, 250.70. This includes $12, 449.61 in a CD, $1,575.31 in savings, and $1,225.788 in checking A motion was made to appoint the current slate of officers and trustees for another 2-year term: president - Larry Carey; vice-president - Charlie Brown; treasurer - Arline Lincoln; secretary - Martha Morse; curator - Ed Lemon; auditor - Rodney Whipple. Trustees are: Joe and Alana Mankowsky, Clare Green, Patty Ernest, and Barbara Walker. New Business: Larry Carey reported on work done on the WHS building, including new frames for the rotted windows, thanks to Jack Cadwell, Larry Carey, and Mike Carey. A ditch was dug and filled around the outside of the building to take moisture away. (thanks to Brian Miner). Larry suggested the WHS prepare a special float for the town's 250th anniversary in 2013. Curator's Report: Ed Lemon reported that the top level of WHS possessions has been photographed, written up, and placed on-line. He thanked Cal and Freddie Fellows, Deb Paulson, Bev Shepardson, Liz Whipple and Nadia Marti for their work on archiving. He also acknowledged and thanked those who gave their time on summer Sundays to keep the building open. He took the 1830 Blake map to Staples in Keene for scanning, and learned that it will cost between $1.98 and $3.50 per copy, depending on the size. He inquired on the whereabouts of the original of the 1763 map, which has not been found. Ed described the Rhoda Cooke collection of letters and photos from the years 1844-1935, recently unearthed at the society building. Another interesting find were boxes of ladies garments, dating back to the early 1800's, some of which will now be on display at the WHS building. Ed is seeking information on their source. Ed asked for volunteers to keep the Society building open on Saturday, Oct. 9. to coincide with the Columbus Day Art Show in town hall. Charlie and Elaine Brown volunteered for 10-12, and Barbara Walker will be there from noon until 2 pm. Discussion followed on the need for more space for exhibits and more information on them, with special attention on Old Home Day. The improved condition of the building and exhibits was recognized by WHS building visitors at OHD 2010, and Ed recognized that this is due to the efforts of many volunteers. Larry noted that wall space is needed to hang more portraits. It was suggested that paneling be put up on the way to basement to hang pictures. Some portraits have no name, and it was suggested they be digitalized and posted on the Warwick-L for identification. The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m., with refreshments following. Next meeting will be December 15, 2010. Respectfully submitted, Martha Morse, Secretary
