Broadband Update The Broadband Committee's assignment is to bring high-speed, affordable Internet access to Warwick. We have the high speed part under control. Now we've turned our attention to making it affordable. In September, the Selectboard approved in principle our suggestion that Warwick Broadband Service offer credit terms to two new subscribers per month. Our idea, which may undergo changes before it is implemented, is to let these two subscribers, on a first come, first served basis, pay for the radio/receiver that brings the Internet signal to their computers at $35 per month for a year. The board delegated Town Coordinator David Young to consult with town counsel about the steps necessary to protect the town if a subscriber becomes unable or unwilling to pay for the equipment. Warwick Broadband does not make a profit on the hardware, and it has a responsibility to the people of the town not to lose money by extending credit. At the same time, we recognize an advantage to the town if we can help people to subscribe sooner than they otherwise could. The more subscribers there are, the faster we can pay back the $40,000 startup money town meeting voted, and expand service to the more remote parts of town. David Young will be setting up a waiting list for people who find the time payment option attractive. You can contact him in the selectboard office (544 6315). The plan that emerges from consultation with town counsel and the selectboard's final vote may differ from what is described here, but you'll be under no obligation if it doesn't suit your needs.
