As of June 19 the Warwick Broadband System is serving five town buildings and 20 private subscribers. Twelve people are waiting for their system to be installed. Our volunteer installers are doing about four installations each weekend, weather permitting. Another 15 residents have said they're interested, but they're not yet ready to schedule an appointment. Except where the Internet radio/receiver has a direct view of either the fire tower on Mt. Grace or the cell tower off Route 78, subscribers are noticing a significant slowdown (the technical term is "rainfade") where the signal has to go through wet foliage. It's still faster than satellite, which tends to shut down completely in the kind of rain that slows down the broadband system. We don't know of any cure for this, but we'll stay alert looking for possibilities. No matter what kind of Internet connection you have, the Broadband Committee asks that you indicate your service on the state's geographic information system (GIS) map at http://maps.massgis.state.ma.us/broadband/broadband_survey_map.htm If this address takes up more than one line, you may have to copy and paste it into your browser. It's important to do this because the resulting map will give us a better sense of where we are reaching and where we are not, so we can plan where to extend the system in the future. The state asks for this information as part of documenting in a very granular fashion where the unserved areas are. This is important if we are to attract state or federal assistance meant to extend broadband in rural areas. This information may also become part of the national program that is mapping unserved areas. If you don't want to register on the map yourself, please let me do it for you. Just call me (544 7010) or send email . I'll take your information and put you on the map.
