Warwick Buildings and Energy Committee draft minutes, April 23, 2014, at 6:45 pm Attending: Dan Dibble (DD), Janice Kurkoski (JK), Steve Kurkoski (SK), Jack Cadwell (JK), Mary Humphries (MH) Minutes of last meeting were approved. Warwick Community School Gym roof The roof is still leaking when it rains. JK Reports that David Young (DY) has put on the Town Warrant about $150K for reshingling and incidentals. There is a lot of warm air leaking through the joints between the Structual Insulated Panels (SIPs) that make up the gym and stage roofs. The Architect for the school Chip Greenburg told us that the Petersham school has the same roof as our school so Janice and Steve went to the Petersham school. They performed a blower door test with an infra red camera and found the same problems as our school. JK - The school reports that they do not use the gym during very cold weather. It is too cold. Where do we find the money to repair the roof if it needs further work after the shingles are removed and we find out we have a problem? If the new shingles are 50 yr. shingles then there will not likely be another opportunity to fix this for a very long time, and the lost heat energy alone would have paid for the fix many times over. JC - Maybe we should enlarge the pictures of the school roof and have them ready for Town Meeting to show the problem we have. DD will talk with David about what we might do to solve the insulation and air leakage problems while we have a chance during re-roofing. Green Communities JK - Five criteria have to be satisfied in town to be eligible to be a Green Community. If a town becomes a Green Community they will get at least $125K to help them meet the goals of 20% reduction in energy use over 5 years. There is more money available in following years by competitive bid process. Jim Barry from DOER is willing to come to town and talk to the zoning &/or planning committee, and also hold a special public forum on the stretch code. MH said she will look into the GC program and, if appointed, she will try not to take on too much. New Safety Building JK - Fred Heyes sent Steve & Janice the preliminary plans (which JK did fwd. to committee and Peter Talmage). We are waiting for Peter to look over and hope to meet with Fred and others on their committee in the near future. We will write a list of questions. Conservation and Solar Workshop Saturday May 17, 9am at the Metcalf Chapel. Dan will introduce a program on energy conservation and SK & JK will cover aspects of Solar PV. Town Hall Jack said Don will be taking two more windows from the main hall to rebuild soon. Misc. - Guardian Energy, who is a project expeditor for NGrid, will be conducting a walk-thru of town buildings Friday April 25 starting at 10:00 am at the school. These audits are the start of meeting one of the criteria for Green Communities. Adjourned 8:56PM - Next meeting will be held as needed.
