Animal Control Officer: Takes calls involving stray/loose dogs, missing or found dogs, missing or found cats; Attempts to capture dogs reported running loose Takes into custody any dog captured running loose off its owner's property with no owner in the vicinity Assesses loose dog fines to owners of dogs caught running loose Investigates complaints of barking dogs, vicious dogs, nuisance dogs and animal cruelty Promotes proper vaccination and licensing of dogs and the proper vaccination of cats and livestock Answers public information inquiries and provides public information on a wide variety of subjects (i.e. rabies clinics, reduced cost spay/neuter programs, dog bite prevention, general information on pet care, rabies, living with wildlife). Adopts dogs directly to new owners after a mandatory 10-day holding period and all necessary veterinary care, including spay or neuter. Provides a Town-owned humane trap for those having issues with problem wildlife (i.e. skunks, raccoons, woodchucks). The current ACO applies annually for a Massachusetts Animal Coalition "I'm Animal Friendly" grant that allows for the continuation of Warwick's Spay/Neuter Program, and raises funds for Yelp For Help (Warwick Animal Control Donation Account) to provide veterinary care to animals in ACO custody. Both programs were established by current ACO Rosa Calcari. As a rule, the ACO does not accept the surrender of owned pets, nor does the ACO take stray cats directly into her custody. Yelp For Help funds are used to provide basic veterinary care to stray cats that are reported as being found stray within 1 week of having been found. The ACO will assist those who have found stray cats in placement of cats outside the home. She will also assist pet owners in re-homing their dog or cat, but will not take the animal directly into custody. Situations outside the duties and responsibilities of the Animal Control Officer will result in the ACO providing referrals or alternate resources to assist in resolving the reported issue. Animal Inspector: Issues quarantines for dog or cat scratches or bites that break the skin on a human or domestic animal Issues quarantines to dogs and cats that present with wounds of unknown origin Fills out the annual reports for barns and livestock. Field Driver: Attempts to capture loose livestock and return said livestock to the owner. The Field Driver is not the Animal Control Officer, and has no responsibilities or authority that overlaps the Animal Control Officer or Animal Inspector positions.
